Floppy drive will only read one disk

My floppy drive will not read subsequently inserted disks. It will only display the contents of the first disk I insert. I have to reboot in order to read another disk. Any idea what's wrong?

Your floppy drive has a sensor that tells the computer when a disk is changed. It's possible that the sensor has failed, but it could be that fluff has got into the drive and is preventing it from working. Clean the drive, preferably by taking it out of the computer and blowing any dust from it. At the same time, check that the drive cable is properly connected, since it might have worked loose so that the sensor signal is disconnected.

Before you reach for the screwdrivers, there are a couple of software points worth checking. In Device Manager (accessed from Control Panel, System icon) expand Disk drives. Select the floppy drive entry and click Properties. Click the Settings tab and check that, under Options, the Removable box is ticked. It would also be worth checking in Bios Setup that the floppy drive is configured for the correct type. See also tips Can't access the floppy drive and Can't write data to a floppy disk
